Drawing their artistic strength from a shared spirit of curiosity, risk-taking and exploration, Ludmila Berlinskaya and Arthur Ancelle are inseparable pianists, a duo united on stage as in life. More than fifteen years of performing together have forged an exceptional artistic partnership, founded on instinctive listening, shared breathing and a common musical vision.
Described as "sensational pianists" (Fanfare), praised for their "brilliant, joyful playing" (Diapason), and admired for the way they "cultivate duality in a supernatural dimension" (Le Monde), Berlinskaya and Ancelle have earned an international reputation for performances that combine virtuosity with refinement, intellectual curiosity with communicative energy. Both acclaimed soloists and heirs to distinguished musical traditions, Ludmila Berlinskaya and Arthur Ancelle have made the piano duo the centre of their artistic identity. Through imaginative programming, innovative concert formats and an engaging dialogue with audiences, they are committed to expanding the place of the piano duo alongside the great chamber music formations.
This conviction led them to create Piano-Piano, an ambitious artistic, educational and heritage project entirely devoted to the repertoire for two pianos and piano four hands.
Performing together since 2011, they have built an exceptionally broad repertoire, embracing both the masterpieces of the literature and a wealth of neglected works. Passionate advocates of rediscovery, they regularly champion forgotten composers while exploring the rich tradition of transcription, enriched in particular by Arthur Ancelle's own concert arrangements, including Francesca da Rimini, Romeo and Juliet, Après une lecture du Dante and numerous other works.
Each season they appear in leading concert halls including the Philharmonie de Paris, Auditorium de Radio France, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Salle Gaveau, Salle Cortot, the St Petersburg and Moscow Philharmonic Halls, Zaryadye Hall, the Mariinsky Concert Hall, and the Megaron Athens Concert Hall. They are also regular guests at prestigious festivals such as La Roque d'Anthéron, Tokyo Spring Festival, Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, December Nights Festival (Moscow), Klavier-Raritäten Husum, Rota das Artes (Lisbon), Lille Piano(s) Festival, Lisztomanias, Les Solistes à Bagatelle and many others.
With a repertoire encompassing around ten double concertos, they collaborate regularly with renowned orchestras including the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, Orchestre National d'Île-de-France, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, Victor Hugo Franche-Comté Orchestra, Picardie Orchestra, Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, under conductors such as Nikolai Alexeev, Arie van Beek, Dmitry Liss, Lin Tao, Jean-François Verdier, Vahan Mardirossian, Jader Bignamini, Rebecca Tong, Lucie Leguay, Laurent Comte and many others.
Alongside an intense international performing schedule, Berlinskaya and Ancelle have developed a remarkable recording career. Together they have released ten critically acclaimed albums, earning distinctions including Gramophone Editor's Choice, Le Monde Album of the Year, Libération Album of the Year, Classica Choc, Pianiste Maestro, ResMusica's Clé d'Or, Musiq3's Musical Choice, and numerous other international awards. Their latest recording projects have further strengthened their reputation for uncovering overlooked masterpieces of the twentieth-century repertoire. Their performances are regularly broadcast by France Musique, Radio Classique, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, NPO Klassiek, RTS, Radio Orpheus and other major broadcasters.
Deeply committed to passing on their experience to the next generation, Ludmila Berlinskaya and Arthur Ancelle direct the piano duo class at the École Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot, one of the very few programmes in the world entirely dedicated to this discipline.
They are also the founders and artistic directors of Piano-Piano, which today brings together the Rungis Piano-Piano Festival, the Académie Piano-Piano, the Open Piano-Piano Database, a specialist music library, international academies and a growing number of artistic and educational initiatives devoted exclusively to the world of piano duos.
