Double your pleasure

Dear friends,
we borrowed the title of a recent article by Jed Distler about our Liszt recording, as we feel it reflects well our life and state of mind !
The double pleasure of pursuing careers as a duet as well as soloists.
The double pleasure of being on stage and promoting others thanks to our festival.
The double pleasure of receiving from the audience, and giving to our students.

It is about time we tell you about the 5th edition of our festival, La Clé des Portes : it will take place from July 26th to 30th, and this year's thematic is "FIVE" !
Not only will you hear quintets, but the Mighty Handful, some opus linked with 5, pieces in 5 movements, pieces for 5 hands, variations on Take 5 and many more surprises !
Always eager to promote young talented musicians, you will discover Adélaïde Ferrière, new "revelation" of the Victoires de la Musique, or Lea Hennino, together with renowned musicians such as Alena Baeva or Christian-Pierre La Marca...

The fan club is growing : this season, they were 4 travelling with us for our concerts in Lisbon8 in Moscow... More than 20 people are travelling with us to Saint-Petersburg for our concert in the Philharmony Hall on June 5th !

After having received a lot of praise from the french press, and being rewarded withGramophone's Editor's Choice, our Liszt recording is getting very well received by the international press :
Jonathan Welsh writes :"the two pianists are so well synchronised as to give the impression of only one player. There is also devilment in the playing (...) I must say that I was completely bowled over by this recording (...) Overall this is an absolutely splendid and fascinating disc (...) This is my favourite Liszt disc of the year so far, and I award full marks to all concerned!" formusicweb-international.com
Jed Distler gives our recording a 10/10 :"Liszt aficionados and collectors of piano curiosities alike will need no further prodding to acquire this disc." for classicstoday.com
Remy Franck for Pizzicato, in Luxemburg :"This very special program with various arrangements of works by Liszt and Saint-Saëns, and notably the world premiere recording of Liszt’s B minor Sonata in the Saint-Saëns version, shows outstanding pianism in 3D."

While the Liszt / Saint-Saëns recording is still getting a lot of attention, Ludmila's new recording for Melodiya is already available : a live recording of a concert given in Moscow Conservatory last fall. Here is what the russian magazine Piano Forum writes about it : "The interpretation of Medtner Quintet is undoubtedly a great achievement: the musicians have succeeded in making an exceptional unity of this grandiose tapestry of sounds, and they have found the right emotional colors for this quintet: the "nostalgia", essential to this composer, has acquired deep tones, a philosophical sense proper to the Belle Epoque - a sad farewell to the comfort and calm tranquility of the passing time."

We will be back in the studios by the end of June : two new solo recordings with very personal repertoire !

Among the gratifying successes of the spring, Ludmila was thrilled that her student Dimitri Malignan won the Prix Cortot, rewarding the best pianist of the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. Last year, this prize was given to Lucas Debargue : we can only wish Dimitri a similar success in the career !

Among all her activities, Ludmila was as well invited by the 1st channel of Russian TV for a prime time show : her star-role in The Great Space Travel keeps her iconic image through the years !

Gramophone !

Dear friends, we are happy to announce that our Liszt / Saint-Saëns recording has been among Gramophone's Editor's Choice in March !

"I can only say I was bowled over by the playing of this Franco-Russian husband-and-wife duo, astonished to the extent that any initial scepticism, any notion of this being a mere curiosity, is utterly confounded. Their performance of this music is everything and more that I had hoped for (...) this will be among my discs of the year" says Jeremy Nicholas

In France, this recording continued to receive praise from the specialized press :

5 Diapasons from eponym magazine : "Thanks to the talent of the performers, these enrichments (...) offer a real rediscovery of the masterpiece"
- "Must" from concertonet.com : "This exceptional disc will enrich the history of recording. This interpretation (...) already sounds like an historical version." writesChristian Lorandin
- In Le Monde, Pierre Gervasoni writes :"The B minor Sonata (transcribed by Saint-Saëns) and her twin sister, After a reading of the Dante (transcribed by Arthur Ancelle), cultivate duality in a supernatural dimension (transcendental technique and fairy expression)"

There were as well a lot of interviews, such as Passion Classique with Olivier BellamyClassic Club with Lionel EsparzaSortez les violons withBernard Niedda, and a long meeting with Lorenzo Ciavarini forCulturebox of France Télévisions.
And more to come !

Lately, we performed mostly individually, with the exception of a four-hands concert in Paris.
The occasion for Arthur to give his first recital in Moscow Conservatory, an Ibert, Dutilleux, Chopin program.
Following the success of the concerts in Russia, Arthur will perform again next season in Chernogolovka and Moscow Conservatory

Over the next months, we will be performing solo concerts, 2 pianos, 4 hands, chamber music, we will record individual programs for our dear Melodiya, Ludmila's "Quintet+" concert in Moscow will be released worldwide, and we are preparing a very ambitious project as a Piano Duet for 2018.
The calendar will soon be updated as concert propositions are piling up !

Friday the 13th

Dear friends,
we would like to express our warmest wishes to all of you for 2017 !
May it be a year of daily joy, and love !  May each one of us find happiness in creative energy and generosity !

You shall have noticed that we failed sending our newsletter since October - it's been a hectic time, with a lot of travel, concerts and even moving to a new house !

Why Friday the 13th : this date, symbol of luck or misfortune, depending on one's superstition, was the official release date of our new album in many countries.

Last fall was extremely busy for Ludmila : recitals in France, presentation of our album in Moscow, a lot of chamber music...
Ludmila and the New Russian Quartet performed 2 quintets and 2 sextets with Igor Fedorov in Moscow Conservatory, live recorded by Melodiya and to be released next spring ! Among which the bewitching quintets of Medtner and Shostakovich...

Ludmila's last recital in Paris on November 4th was a huge success and widely relayed by the press ; among the reviews, Bachtrack gave it a 5 stars : "There are rare and precious persons who managed to keep from their youth the enthusiasm, the freshness and the joy (...) Ludmila Berlinskaya playing Scriabin... Jewel ! Moment of pure wonder !"

We had never experienced such a promotional campaign until now : starting with the celebration of Ludmila's birthday live on France Musique, up to one of the most popular programs on Europe 1, there wasn't a day without our new album on the French radio for the past 2 weeks ! Radio ClassiqueFrance Culture, Fréquence Protestante, Radio Vinci AutoroutesRCJ honored us with interviews and prime time broadcasts !

The new album has been incredibly well received so far by the French press :
classiquenews.com awards it a "CLIC" and Alban Deags honors it with a long review :"Unforgettable duet : and if the Berlinskaya / Ancelle simply was the most exciting of the current stage ?"
Libération dedicates a long article with both a review and an interview of the duet ; the infamous Guillaume Tion describes : "The interpretation is (...) carried away in the fusion of two entities into a single pianist, a "Ludmilur Ancelskaya" relaxed in power and precise in lightness"
- For Alain Cochard, in his review for concertclassic.com, "their recording is dazzling with blast, depth and legibility !"
Frédérick Casadesus offers a serial for Mediapart in 3 episodes : "When we listen to these two artists, we are happy: their understanding, the lyricism they show, give us hope. Yes, the world can be better."

Many journalists were curious to hear the legendary B minor Liszt Sonata, in that version for 2 pianos by Camille Saint-Saëns !
The Salle Cortot was completely full on January 10th, Ludmila fell down one hour before the concert and suffered from a severe sprain doubled with a small fracture of her left foot...
Alexandre Sorel for Pianiste Magazine reviews the concert with "Masterful duet !"
La Lettre du Musicien discovers this interpretation of the Liszt Sonata : "inspired Andante, electrifying fugue, mystical exaltation of the themes !"
- while Manuel Gaulhiac speaks of "An exceptional complicity between the two pianists", "A homogeneity rarely equaled in two-pianos" enable to re-discover Liszt Sonata thanks to the duet "whose interpretation renews the vision of the piece."
